(Ghurar al-Hikam: Modesty And Shame)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble family, and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

One who is not ashamed of the people will not feel ashamed in front of Allah, the Glorified.

This profound statement emphasizes the importance of having a sense of shame and modesty in our interactions with others. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.

The key word in this Hadith is (istahya) "استحي", which translates to "feel ashamed" or

have a sense of shame.

This word conveys the idea of feeling a sense of modesty, humility, and reverence towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a quality that encompasses a deep awareness of one's actions and their consequences, both in the sight of Allah and in the eyes of others.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-A'raf, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (7:26)

O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember

This verse highlights the importance of modesty in our physical appearance, but it also extends to our behavior and interactions with others.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (49:11)

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers

This verse emphasizes the importance of treating others with respect, refraining from mockery, and avoiding offensive language.

Based on these Quranic verses, we can understand that feeling a sense of shame and modesty in front of others is not a sign of weakness, but rather a reflection of our faith and piety. It is a quality that encourages us to be mindful of our actions and words, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam and the principles of righteousness.

When Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that

One who is not ashamed of the people will not feel ashamed in front of Allah, the Glorified,

he is reminding us that our behavior towards others is a reflection of our relationship with Allah. If we are heedless of the opinions and judgments of people, it may indicate a lack of awareness and consciousness of Allah's presence in our lives.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, understood the importance of this quality. He exemplified it in his own life, always displaying humility, modesty, and respect towards others. His actions were guided by his deep reverence for Allah and his desire to please Him in all aspects of his life.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for us to cultivate a sense of shame and modesty in our interactions with others. It encourages us to be mindful of our behavior, words, and actions, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam and reflect our reverence for Allah. By doing so, we not only uphold the principles of righteousness but also strengthen our relationship with Allah and earn His pleasure. May Allah grant us the ability to embody this noble quality and may He guide us on the path of righteousness.
