لاتَعْصِ نَفْسَكَ إذا هِيَ أرْشَدَتْكَ۔
Do not defy your soul when it guides you to the right path.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Do not defy your soul when it guides you to the right path.
This wise utterance emphasizes the importance of following our inner guidance and not going against it. Let us delve deeper into the meaning and significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (ta'si) "تَعْصِ" in the Hadith refers to defying or rebelling against oneself. It implies going against one's own conscience or inner guidance. The word (nafsak) "نَفْسَكَ" means one's own soul or self. Therefore, the Hadith admonishes us not to go against our own inner guidance when it directs us towards the right path.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has repeatedly emphasized the importance of following our inner conscience and guidance in the Quran. In Surah Al-Shams, Allah says, (Quran 91:7-10)
By the soul and He who proportioned it. And inspired it with discernment of its wickedness and its righteousness. He has succeeded who purifies it, and he has failed who instills it with corruption.
This verse highlights that Allah has endowed every soul with the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. Our conscience serves as a guide, directing us towards righteousness and warning us against evil. Therefore, when our soul guides us towards the right path, it is essential to heed its advice and not defy it.
Another verse that supports the message of the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Qiyamah, where Allah says, (Quran 76:2-3)
Indeed, We have created man from a sperm-drop mixture that We may try him; and We made him hearing and seeing. Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.
This verse highlights that Allah has bestowed upon human beings the faculties of hearing and seeing, which enable us to perceive and understand the truth. Furthermore, Allah has guided us to the right path. Therefore, when our soul guides us towards righteousness, it is a manifestation of the guidance bestowed upon us by Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in this Hadith encourages us to trust our inner guidance and not allow external influences or temptations to divert us from the right path. It reminds us that our soul is inherently inclined towards goodness and righteousness, and we should not suppress or ignore its guidance.
By following our inner guidance, we can make choices that align with the teachings of Islam and lead to spiritual growth. For example, when faced with a moral dilemma, our conscience may guide us to be honest, even if it means facing difficulties or losses. By heeding this guidance, we uphold the values of integrity and righteousness.
On the other hand, defying our soul's guidance can have detrimental consequences. It can lead to a sense of guilt, inner turmoil, and distance from Allah. Ignoring our conscience can also result in making decisions that are contrary to the teachings of Islam, leading to spiritual and moral decline.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to develop a strong connection with our inner selves and nurture our conscience. This can be achieved through self-reflection, seeking knowledge, and continuously purifying our hearts and minds. By doing so, we can strengthen our ability to discern right from wrong and follow the guidance of our soul.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us not to defy our soul when it guides us to the right path. This message aligns with the Quranic teachings that emphasize the importance of following our inner guidance and conscience. By heeding this advice, we can lead a life of righteousness and spiritual growth. May Allah grant us the wisdom and strength to always follow the guidance of our souls.
