(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Scholar)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The beauty of a scholar is [in] his acting upon his knowledge.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of not only acquiring knowledge but also implementing it in our actions. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this thought-provoking Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (jamal) "جَمَالُ" in Arabic means beauty or excellence. It signifies the inner and outer qualities that make something or someone pleasing and admirable. In this Hadith, it refers to the beauty or excellence of a scholar. The term (al-'alim) "العَالِمِ" refers to a person who possesses knowledge, particularly religious knowledge. It encompasses not only the scholars of Islamic jurisprudence and theology but also those who have deep understanding and wisdom in various fields of knowledge.

The Hadith highlights that the true beauty of a scholar lies in their practical application of the knowledge they possess. It is not enough to simply accumulate information or engage in intellectual discussions. The real worth of knowledge is manifested when it is put into action, benefiting oneself and others. This Hadith encourages scholars and students of knowledge to embody the teachings they have acquired and to live their lives in accordance with the principles and values they have learned.

The Quran provides numerous verses that support the essence of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:110),

You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.

This verse highlights the importance of not only believing in Allah but also actively promoting righteousness and preventing evil. It emphasizes the practical implementation of knowledge in guiding others towards goodness.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse emphasizes the significance of righteous actions and mutual advice in the pursuit of salvation. It emphasizes that true knowledge is not limited to theoretical understanding but is demonstrated through righteous deeds and sincere advice to others.

The consequences of acting upon knowledge are far-reaching. When a scholar implements their knowledge, they become a source of guidance and inspiration for others. Their actions speak louder than words and have a profound impact on society. People are more likely to be influenced and inspired by individuals who practice what they preach. By embodying their knowledge, scholars become role models and catalysts for positive change.

Moreover, the practical application of knowledge leads to personal growth and spiritual development. It strengthens one's faith and deepens their connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It allows individuals to experience the transformative power of knowledge in their own lives. By acting upon their knowledge, scholars attain a higher level of consciousness and awareness, enabling them to navigate the complexities of life with wisdom and integrity.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of not only seeking knowledge but also implementing it in our daily lives. As Muslims, we should strive to be scholars in our own right, constantly seeking knowledge and applying it in our actions. Whether it is in our personal relationships, professional endeavors, or community engagements, we should strive to embody the teachings of Islam and be a source of goodness and guidance for others.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the beauty of a scholar lies in their practical application of knowledge. It encourages scholars and students of knowledge to not only accumulate information but also to implement it in their actions. By doing so, they become a source of guidance and inspiration for others, while also experiencing personal growth and spiritual development. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us all with beneficial knowledge and enable us to act upon it in the best possible manner.
