كَفى بِالتَّواضُعِ رِفْعَةً۔
Humility suffices as loftiness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Humility)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Humility suffices as loftiness.
This profound statement emphasizes the virtue and significance of humility in attaining true greatness and elevation in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (تَوَاضُعِ) "tawadhu" in Arabic refers to humility, modesty, and humbleness. It is the act of lowering oneself before Allah and recognizing one's own insignificance in comparison to His greatness. It involves acknowledging that all blessings, talents, and achievements are bestowed upon us by Allah alone. The word (رِفْعَةً) "rif'ah" means loftiness, elevation, or high status.
The Quran beautifully emphasizes the importance of humility in several verses. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah says,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse highlights that true nobility and greatness lie in righteousness and piety, not in worldly status or lineage. It is the humble and righteous individuals who are elevated in the sight of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:83), Allah says,
That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.
This verse emphasizes that those who do not seek worldly fame or power, but instead remain humble and focused on the Hereafter, will be granted the best outcome by Allah.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true greatness and elevation are not achieved through arrogance, pride, or seeking superiority over others. Rather, it is through humility and modesty that one attains true honor and high status in the sight of Allah. When a person humbles themselves before Allah, they acknowledge their dependence on Him and their need for His guidance and mercy. This humility leads to a deep sense of gratitude and submission to Allah's will.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was the epitome of knowledge and wisdom. His unparalleled understanding of the Quran and his profound insights into the teachings of Islam are well-known. Despite his immense knowledge and position as the rightful successor of the Prophet (ﷺ), he remained humble and down-to-earth. He never sought power or authority for personal gain, but rather for the sake of upholding justice and guiding the Muslim community.
The consequences of practicing humility are profound. When we humble ourselves before Allah, we develop a strong connection with Him and seek His pleasure above all else. This humility enables us to recognize and appreciate the blessings in our lives, as well as the abilities and talents bestowed upon us by Allah. It also fosters a sense of empathy and compassion towards others, as we realize that all human beings are equal in the sight of Allah.
Humility also serves as a protection against arrogance and pride, which are destructive traits that distance us from Allah's mercy. Arrogance blinds us to our own faults and prevents us from seeking forgiveness and improvement. On the other hand, humility opens the doors of repentance and allows us to constantly strive for self-improvement and spiritual growth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that humility is the key to true greatness and elevation in the sight of Allah. By humbling ourselves before Him, we acknowledge our dependence on His mercy and guidance. This humility leads to gratitude, submission, and a deep connection with Allah. It protects us from arrogance and pride, enabling us to constantly strive for self-improvement and righteousness. May Allah grant us the ability to embody humility in our lives and attain true loftiness in His sight.
