حُبُّ العِلْمِ، وحُسْنُ الحِلْمِ، ولُزومُ الصَّوابِ مِنْ فَضائِلِ أُولِي النُّهى والألْبابِ۔
Love of knowledge, virtuous forbearance and adhering to the right are from the merits of the people of reason and understanding.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intelligent)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of three virtues: love of knowledge, virtuous forbearance, and adhering to the right path. These qualities are considered merits of the people of reason and understanding. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of these words and explore their significance in the light of the Quran.
Firstly, the love of knowledge (حُبُّ العِلْمِ) is a fundamental characteristic that every Muslim should strive to possess. It encompasses seeking knowledge, acquiring wisdom, and constantly expanding one's understanding of the world around them. The Quran encourages the pursuit of knowledge in numerous verses. For example, in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who are ignorant. It emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and the elevated status it brings.
Furthermore, the Quran repeatedly emphasizes the virtue of knowledge and its connection to faith. In Surah Al-Qasas (28:14), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And We made them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and [when] they were certain of Our signs.
This verse refers to the story of Prophet Musa (Moses) and Prophet Harun (Aaron), who were chosen as leaders due to their knowledge, patience, and certainty in the signs of Allah. It highlights the importance of knowledge in guiding others and leading them on the right path.
Secondly, virtuous forbearance (حُسْنُ الحِلْمِ) is another essential quality emphasized in this Hadith. It refers to the ability to remain patient and composed in the face of adversity, to control one's anger, and to respond to difficult situations with wisdom and kindness. The Quran repeatedly praises those who possess forbearance. In Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse highlights the importance of controlling one's anger and forgiving others, even in challenging circumstances. It emphasizes that virtuous forbearance is a characteristic beloved by Allah.
Moreover, the Quran provides examples of prophets and righteous individuals who displayed forbearance in the face of adversity. Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) is a prime example of someone who demonstrated virtuous forbearance. Despite being betrayed by his brothers and enduring years of imprisonment, he remained patient and forgiving. This quality ultimately led to his elevation and success. The story of Prophet Yusuf serves as a powerful reminder of the rewards that come with practicing forbearance.
Lastly, adhering to the right path (لُزومُ الصَّوابِ) is emphasized as a merit of the people of reason and understanding. It refers to steadfastness in following the teachings of Islam and making choices that align with the principles of righteousness and justice. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of adhering to the right path. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:256), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong.
This verse highlights the importance of choosing the right path willingly and without coercion. It emphasizes that the truth is distinct from falsehood and encourages Muslims to adhere to the path of righteousness.
Additionally, the Quran provides examples of individuals who adhered to the right path, such as the Prophets and their righteous companions. For instance, Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) is praised for his unwavering commitment to the truth and his refusal to worship idols. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to the right path, even in the face of opposition.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the virtues of love of knowledge, virtuous forbearance, and adhering to the right path. These qualities are not only praised by Imam Ali but are also emphasized in the Quran. The Quranic verses provided serve as evidence of the significance of these virtues and their connection to faith and righteousness. As Muslims, we should strive to cultivate these qualities within ourselves, as they are essential for personal growth, guidance, and the betterment of society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody these virtues and follow in the footsteps of the people of reason and understanding.
