Hadith #7018

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العقلُ أفضلُ مَرجُوّ" which translates to

Intellect is the best thing that is hoped for.

This thought-provoking saying emphasizes the importance and superiority of intellect in the eyes of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).

The word (‘aql) "عقل" in Arabic refers to intellect or rationality. It is the faculty of reasoning, understanding, and discernment that distinguishes humans from other creatures. It is the ability to comprehend, analyze, and make sound judgments. In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of intellect and its role in guiding individuals towards righteousness and success.

The Quran also emphasizes the importance of intellect and rationality. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:190)

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.

This verse encourages Muslims to reflect upon the signs of Allah's creation, using their intellect to recognize His existence and appreciate His wisdom.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 4:82)

Do they not then reflect upon the Quran? Had it been from any other than Allah, they would surely have found therein much discrepancy.
