(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hope In [The Mercy Of] Allah And [In] Others)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ هانَتْ عَلَيهِ نَفْسُهُ فَلا تَرْجُ خَيْرَهُ۔

This can be translated as,

When one takes himself to be lowly, [then] do not expect [or hope] for any good from him.

This amazing Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of self-worth and self-perception in determining one's actions and outcomes.

The word (hānat) "هانَتْ" in this Hadith refers to the act of belittling oneself or considering oneself to be of little value. It signifies a state of low self-esteem or self-deprecation. When a person views themselves in such a negative light, it affects their mindset, attitude, and ultimately their actions. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us that when someone holds such a low opinion of themselves, we should not expect any good or positive outcomes from them.

This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasizes the importance of self-respect and self-worth. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has created each individual with unique abilities and potentials. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah says, (Quran 17:70)

And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference

This verse highlights the inherent honor and worth bestowed upon every human being by Allah.

Believing in one's own worth and capabilities is essential for personal growth, success, and the ability to positively contribute to society. When a person underestimates themselves, it hinders their ability to fulfill their potential and make a positive impact. The Quran encourages self-confidence and self-belief, as seen in the story of Prophet Musa (Moses) when he doubted his ability to convey Allah's message to Pharaoh. Allah reassured him, saying, (Quran 20:46)

Fear not. Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to recognize their own worth and not undermine themselves. It encourages us to have a positive self-image and to strive for excellence in all aspects of life. When we have a healthy sense of self-worth, we are more likely to have confidence in our abilities and make positive contributions to our communities.

On the other hand, if someone constantly belittles themselves and lacks self-confidence, it can lead to a lack of motivation, self-imposed limitations, and a negative impact on their relationships and achievements. This Hadith serves as a cautionary reminder to not place our hopes or expectations on individuals who have a negative perception of themselves, as it may hinder their ability to bring about positive change or contribute meaningfully.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of recognizing and valuing our own self-worth. It reminds us that when someone holds a low opinion of themselves, it is unlikely that they will be able to bring about positive outcomes. As Muslims, we are encouraged to have a positive self-image, believe in our abilities, and strive for excellence in all aspects of life. By doing so, we can fulfill our potential and positively impact the world around us. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and confidence to recognize our own worth and strive for excellence.
