(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

إيّاكَ والجَوْرَ، فَإنَّ الجائِرَ لايَريحُ رائِحَةَ الجَنَّةِ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of avoiding tyranny, as the tyrant will not even perceive the fragrance of Paradise.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. (al-jawr) "الجَوْرَ" refers to oppression or injustice. It encompasses any act of transgression or wrongdoing that causes harm to others. (al-ja'ir) "الجائِرَ" refers to the one who commits acts of tyranny or oppression. This person is characterized by their unjust actions and disregard for the rights of others.

To comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly condemns oppression and injustice, and promises severe consequences for those who engage in such behavior. In Surah Al-An'am, verse 135, Allah says,

Say, 'My Lord has only forbidden immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed - and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allah that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allah that which you do not know.'

This verse highlights that oppression is not only prohibited, but it is also considered a grave sin. Allah explicitly forbids oppression "without right," indicating that there may be instances where oppression is justified, such as in cases of self-defense or upholding justice. However, the general principle remains that oppression is to be avoided at all costs.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 77, Allah warns,

And seek by means of what Allah has given you the home of the Hereafter, and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.

This verse reminds us that our ultimate goal should be the Hereafter, but it also emphasizes the importance of maintaining justice and avoiding corruption in this world. Oppression and tyranny are forms of corruption that disrupt the harmony and balance that Allah has established in society.

Now, let us reflect on the wise message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. The Imam advises Muslims to distance themselves from tyranny, as the consequences are severe. The phrase (will not [even] smell the fragrance of Paradise) "لايَريحُ رائِحَةَ الجَنَّةِ" serves as a metaphorical expression to highlight the complete deprivation of the tyrant from the blessings and rewards of Paradise.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, urges us to understand the detrimental effects of tyranny. By engaging in acts of oppression, one not only harms others but also distances themselves from the mercy and blessings of Allah. The tyrant becomes spiritually disconnected from the essence of Paradise, which is a place of peace, justice, and righteousness.

This Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to uphold justice, fairness, and compassion in all aspects of their lives. It encourages us to be mindful of our actions and their impact on others. By avoiding tyranny and striving for justice, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the noble example set by the Prophet Muhammad () and his purified progeny.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of avoiding tyranny and oppression. It serves as a reminder that the consequences of engaging in such behavior are severe, as the tyrant will be deprived of the blessings and rewards of Paradise. By reflecting on the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt, we are reminded to strive for justice and righteousness in all aspects of our lives. May Allah guide us to follow the path of justice and protect us from the temptations of tyranny.
