Generosity is the expander of ability.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "البذل مادة الإمكان" which translates to

Generosity is the expander of ability.

This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense power and transformative nature of generosity.

The word (buzl) "بذل" in Arabic refers to the act of giving or bestowing something upon others. It signifies a selfless act of sharing one's resources, whether they be material possessions, time, or knowledge. The act of generosity is not limited to a specific form but encompasses a wide range of benevolent actions.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes generosity as (maddat al-imkan) "مادة الإمكان", which can be translated as

the expander of ability.

This phrase suggests that generosity has the power to expand and enhance one's capabilities and potential. When we give generously, we not only benefit others but also unlock hidden abilities within ourselves.

The concept of generosity is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages Muslims to be generous and selfless in their dealings with others. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 63:10)

And spend of what We have provided for you before death approaches one of you and he says, 'My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous'

This verse emphasizes the importance of giving generously in this worldly life before it is too late. It reminds us that our ability to give is a blessing from Allah, and we should utilize it to benefit others and earn righteousness. By doing so, we expand our own capacity for goodness and draw closer to Allah.

Another verse that highlights the transformative power of generosity is found in Surah Al-Baqarah, where Allah says, (Quran 2:261)

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing

This verse beautifully illustrates the exponential rewards that come with acts of generosity. Just as a single seed can yield a bountiful harvest, a single act of generosity can have far-reaching effects, benefiting not only the recipient but also the giver and society as a whole. Allah's promise to multiply the reward for those who give in His cause serves as a motivation for Muslims to be generous and selfless.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,

Generosity is the expander of ability,

reminds us that when we give generously, we tap into our own potential and open doors to new opportunities. By sharing our resources, we create a positive ripple effect that can inspire others to do the same. Generosity fosters a sense of unity, compassion, and gratitude within society, leading to a more harmonious and prosperous community.

Moreover, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasis on the expander of ability highlights the transformative nature of generosity. When we give selflessly, we break free from the limitations of selfishness and materialism. Our hearts become more open, our minds more receptive, and our abilities more expansive. We develop a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of humanity and our responsibility towards one another.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that generosity is not merely an act of giving, but a powerful force that expands our own abilities and potential. By being generous, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the example set by our beloved Prophet Muhammad () and his noble companions. Let us strive to be generous Muslims, utilizing our resources to benefit others and unlock our own hidden abilities. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with the ability to be generous and grant us the rewards promised to those who give selflessly.
