لَنْ يُلْقَي العَجُولُ مَحْمُوداً۔
A hasty person never gets praised [for his haste].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Haste And The Hasty)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لَنْ يُلْقَي العَجُولُ مَحْمُوداً۔
This can be translated as,
A hasty person never gets praised [for his haste].
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (ajool) "عَجُولُ" refers to someone who acts hastily or rushes into things without proper consideration. The word (mahmoodan) "مَحْمُوداً" means being praised or commended for one's actions.
To understand the enlightening message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Isra, verse 36,
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse emphasizes the importance of acquiring knowledge and understanding before taking any action. Acting hastily without knowledge can lead to negative consequences and prevent one from receiving praise.
Another verse that sheds light on the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 6, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information and not jumping to conclusions without proper investigation. Hasty actions based on incomplete or false information can lead to harm and regret.
Reflecting on the Hadith, we can understand that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the importance of patience, wisdom, and knowledge in our actions. Rushing into decisions without considering the consequences can lead to mistakes and missed opportunities for praise. Instead, we should strive to be deliberate and thoughtful in our actions, seeking knowledge and understanding before making any judgments or choices.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep knowledge and wisdom. He would carefully consider all aspects of a situation before taking action. His patience and thoughtfulness earned him the respect and admiration of both Shia and Sunni Muslims. By following his example, we can avoid the pitfalls of haste and strive for actions that are praiseworthy in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of avoiding haste in our actions. We should seek knowledge, reflect, and consider the consequences before making any decisions. By doing so, we can strive for actions that are praiseworthy and beneficial, both in this world and the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and patience to act in accordance with His guidance.
