Verily the cry of the oppressed is answered by Allah, the Glorified, because he is asking for his right, and Allah is far greater than that He should deny a person his right.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Oppressed)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the divine response to the cry of the oppressed. Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding.
The word (da'wah) "دَعْوَةَ" in Arabic refers to a plea, invocation, or cry for help. It signifies a heartfelt call for justice and relief from the sufferings of the oppressed. The term (mazlum) "مَظْلُومِ" refers to the one who has been wronged, oppressed, or treated unjustly. It encompasses those who have been denied their rights, whether it be in terms of their wealth, honor, or dignity.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that the cry of the oppressed is answered by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) because they are seeking their rightful due. This highlights the divine attribute of justice and the fact that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is far greater than denying anyone their rights. It is a reassurance to the oppressed that their pleas for justice will not go unheard.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support this concept of Allah's response to the cry of the oppressed. In Surah Ghafir (40:51), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Indeed, We will support Our messengers and those who believe during the life of this world and on the Day when the witnesses will stand.
This verse assures the believers that Allah will support them in their struggles against oppression and injustice.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa (4:75), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And what is [the matter] with you that you fight not in the cause of Allah and [for] the oppressed among men, women, and children who say, 'Our Lord, take us out of this city of oppressive people and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper?'
This verse highlights the importance of standing up for the oppressed and fighting against injustice, as it is a cause that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) supports.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be vigilant in upholding justice and defending the rights of the oppressed. It encourages us to be proactive in seeking justice for those who have been wronged, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) Himself is just and will not deny anyone their rights.
This Hadith also serves as a motivation for individuals to speak out against oppression and stand up for justice. It reminds us that our cries for justice are not in vain, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) hears and responds to the pleas of the oppressed. It encourages us to be a voice for the voiceless and to strive for a society that upholds the principles of justice and fairness.
Moreover, this Hadith has profound consequences for society. It reminds us that a society that neglects the rights of the oppressed is a society that is distant from the teachings of Islam. It calls upon Muslims to create a just and equitable society where the rights of all individuals are protected and respected.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the divine response to the cry of the oppressed. It emphasizes the importance of seeking justice and defending the rights of those who have been wronged. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to be proactive in upholding justice and striving for a society that is fair and just. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to be champions of justice and defenders of the oppressed.
