In deliberateness there is [precaution and] assurance.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Deliberateness And Acting Unhurriedly)
Bismillah, All praise is due to Allah, the Most High, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
In this hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance of deliberateness, caution, and assurance in our actions and decision-making. The word used in the hadith is (istizhaar) "استظهار", which can be translated as "precaution" or "carefulness." It implies taking one's time, thinking deeply, and considering the consequences before making a choice or embarking on a course of action.
The importance of deliberateness can be found in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:36),
And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
This verse emphasizes the need to be cautious and deliberate in our actions, making sure that we have sufficient knowledge and understanding before proceeding. Acting without knowledge can lead to negative consequences and accountability before Allah.
Another verse that supports the concept of deliberateness is found in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse advises Muslims to verify information and not act impulsively based on hearsay or rumors. It encourages us to be cautious, investigate the truth, and avoid causing harm due to ignorance.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasis on deliberateness is rooted in his profound knowledge and wisdom. His understanding of the Quran and his ability to apply its teachings in practical situations made him a role model for Muslims. He recognized the importance of taking time to carefully consider the consequences of our actions, ensuring that they align with the principles of Islam.
Deliberateness can have far-reaching consequences in our personal and communal lives. When we rush into decisions without careful thought, we may end up making mistakes or causing harm to ourselves and others. On the other hand, when we approach matters with caution and assurance, we are more likely to make informed choices that are in line with our values and the teachings of Islam.
For example, in matters of financial transactions, it is essential to be deliberate and cautious. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:188),
And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful].
This verse highlights the importance of being careful and deliberate in financial matters, avoiding any form of injustice or unlawful gain.
In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of deliberateness, caution, and assurance in our actions and decision-making. It aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which encourage us to seek knowledge, verify information, and act with wisdom. By embodying these qualities, we can make informed choices that are in line with the principles of Islam and avoid the negative consequences of impulsive actions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be deliberate and cautious in all aspects of our lives.
