Hadith #4493

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Leniency is the symbol of aptness.

This amazing Hadith emphasizes the importance of gentleness and kindness in our interactions with others. The word (الرِّفْقُ) "leniency" refers to being gentle, compassionate, and considerate towards others. It implies treating others with kindness and understanding, even in difficult situations.

The word (عُنْوانُ) "symbol" in this Hadith signifies a mark or indication of something. It suggests that leniency is not only a desirable quality but also a distinguishing characteristic of those who possess wisdom and righteousness. It is a sign of their aptness and moral excellence.

So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].

This verse highlights the importance of leniency in the Prophet Muhammad's (ﷺ) approach to dealing with people. Despite facing opposition and hardship, he showed kindness and mercy towards others. This leniency not only prevented people from turning away but also fostered a sense of unity and trust. Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.
