Hadith #9676

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure family, his noble companions, and all righteous Muslims.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Every person is answerable for what is in his possession and his family.

This thought-provoking saying emphasizes the individual responsibility that each person holds for their own actions and the well-being of their family.

Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith. The word (mas'ool) "مسؤول" means "answerable" or "accountable." It implies that every individual will be held responsible for their actions and the consequences that arise from them. The word (malakat) "ملكت" refers to what one possesses or owns. It encompasses both material possessions and intangible aspects such as knowledge, skills, and abilities. Lastly, the word (a'yal) "عيال" refers to one's family, including immediate family members and dependents.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes individual responsibility and accountability. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 6:164)

And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another.

This verse highlights the principle that each person is responsible for their own actions and cannot be held accountable for the actions of others.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa, Allah states, (Quran 66:6)

O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones.

This verse emphasizes the duty of individuals to safeguard not only themselves but also their families from the consequences of their actions. It highlights the importance of nurturing a righteous environment within the family and ensuring that one's actions do not lead to harm or destruction.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their responsibilities towards themselves and their families. It encourages individuals to reflect upon their actions and the impact they have on those around them. By recognizing that they are answerable for what they possess and how they care for their families, Muslims are motivated to strive for righteousness and fulfill their obligations.

For example, a person who possesses wealth is accountable for how they acquire and utilize it. They should ensure that their wealth is earned through lawful means and used in a manner that benefits both themselves and their family. This includes providing for their family's needs, supporting them emotionally and spiritually, and fostering an environment of love and compassion.

Similarly, a person who possesses knowledge is responsible for sharing it with their family and using it for the betterment of society. They should educate their children, instill moral values, and guide them towards the path of righteousness. By doing so, they fulfill their duty of passing on beneficial knowledge and nurturing the next generation.

The consequences of neglecting these responsibilities can have far-reaching effects. Neglecting one's family can lead to discord, neglect, and a breakdown of relationships. Neglecting one's possessions can result in misuse, extravagance, and a lack of gratitude. Ultimately, individuals will be held accountable for these actions in the Hereafter.

Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded of the importance of self-accountability and the impact their actions have on their families and society as a whole. It serves as a call to action, urging individuals to fulfill their responsibilities and strive for excellence in all aspects of their lives. By doing so, they not only fulfill their obligations towards themselves and their families but also contribute to the betterment of the Muslim community and society at large.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to fulfill our responsibilities and be mindful of our actions. May He guide us to be righteous individuals who strive for excellence in all aspects of our lives. And may He bless us with families that are a source of love, support, and guidance.
