مَعَ الإنْصافِ تَدُومُ الأُخُوَّةُ۔
With equity brotherhood lasts.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Equity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
مَعَ الإنْصافِ تَدُومُ الأُخُوَّةُ۔
This Hadith can be translated as:
With equity, brotherhood lasts.
Let us delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. The word (insaf) "إنصاف" refers to equity, justice, and fairness. It signifies the act of treating others with equality and impartiality. It is the opposite of injustice and discrimination. The word (tadum) "تدوم" means to endure, to last, or to continue. And finally, (al-ukhuwwah) "الأخوة" means brotherhood, which encompasses the bond of love, compassion, and unity among Muslims.
To understand the impactful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of justice and equity in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah says,
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make peace between them with justice and act equitably. Indeed, Allah loves those who act equitably.
This verse highlights the significance of justice in resolving conflicts and maintaining harmony within the Muslim community. It emphasizes the need for fairness and impartiality in our dealings with others. When we treat others justly, it fosters a sense of brotherhood and unity among Muslims.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8), Allah commands,
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.
This verse emphasizes the importance of standing up for justice, even if it goes against our personal inclinations or biases. It reminds us that justice should prevail over any animosity or prejudice we may harbor towards others. By being just, we not only uphold the principles of Islam but also strengthen the bonds of brotherhood within the Muslim community.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith beautifully encapsulates the essence of these Quranic teachings. It reminds us that true brotherhood can only be achieved and sustained through the practice of justice and equity. When we treat others fairly, without any discrimination or favoritism, we create an environment where love, compassion, and unity can flourish.
Let us reflect on the consequences of disregarding equity in our relationships. When injustice prevails, it breeds resentment, division, and animosity among Muslims. It weakens the fabric of our community and hampers our collective progress. On the other hand, when we embrace equity, we foster an atmosphere of trust, respect, and harmony. It strengthens our bonds and allows us to work together towards common goals.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) impactful saying serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to prioritize justice and fairness in all aspects of our lives. It urges us to examine our actions and ensure that we are treating others with equity. By doing so, we can contribute to the preservation and longevity of brotherhood within the Muslim ummah.
May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to embody the principles of justice and equity in our interactions with others. May He unite the hearts of Muslims and bless us with a lasting brotherhood based on love, compassion, and unity.
