— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Treachery)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لاتَدُومُ مَعَ الغَدْرِ صُحْبَةُ خَلِيل۔
This can be translated as,
With treachery, the companionship of a friend does not last.
Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith by examining the key words and their implications. The word (ghadr) "غَدْرِ" refers to treachery or betrayal. It signifies the act of deceiving or betraying the trust of a friend. The term (suhbah) "صُحْبَةُ" means companionship or friendship, indicating a close and intimate bond between individuals. Lastly, (khaleel) "خَلِيل" refers to a close friend or confidant.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of trust and loyalty in various verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:10), Allah says,
The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.
This verse highlights the unity and brotherhood among Muslims, emphasizing the need for trust and sincerity in our relationships.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:8), Allah states,
Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse encourages Muslims to maintain good relations with those who do not harbor enmity towards them, promoting fairness and justice in all interactions.
