كُنْ عالِماً بِالحَقِّ، عامِلاً بِهِ، يُنْجِكَ اللّهُ سُبْحانَهُ۔
Be knowledgeable about the truth and act upon it, [and through this] Allah, the Glorified, will save you.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Scholar)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
كُنْ عالِماً بِالحَقِّ، عامِلاً بِهِ، يُنْجِكَ اللّهُ سُبْحانَهُ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of acquiring knowledge about the truth and then implementing it in our actions. It assures us that by doing so, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will save us.
Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith by examining its key words. The word (knowledgeable) "عالِماً" refers to having deep understanding and awareness of the truth. It implies seeking knowledge and wisdom, not just superficially, but with a sincere and dedicated effort to comprehend the essence of the truth.
The word (truth) "حَقِّ" signifies the ultimate reality, the divine guidance that is revealed in the Quran and exemplified by the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). It encompasses the knowledge of Allah's commands, prohibitions, and the principles of righteousness.
The word (act upon) "عامِلاً" emphasizes the practical application of the acquired knowledge. It implies living in accordance with the truth, implementing its teachings in our daily lives, and striving to align our actions with the divine guidance.
Now, let us turn to the Quran to find verses that support and shed light on the wise message of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:110),
You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah.
This verse highlights the importance of knowledge and action, as the believers are described as those who not only possess knowledge of the truth but also actively promote it and discourage evil.
In Surah Al-Asr (103:2-3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse emphasizes the significance of both belief and righteous actions. It reminds us that true success lies in not only having knowledge but also acting upon it and encouraging others to follow the path of truth.
Reflecting on the Hadith, we understand that knowledge without action is incomplete and action without knowledge is misguided. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to seek knowledge and understand the truth, but he also emphasizes the importance of implementing that knowledge in our lives. By doing so, we not only benefit ourselves but also become a source of guidance and inspiration for others.
The motivation behind this Hadith is to encourage Muslims to strive for excellence in both knowledge and action. It reminds us that true salvation lies in acquiring knowledge about the truth and then embodying it in our conduct. By doing so, we establish a strong connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and earn His divine protection and guidance.
The consequences of following this Hadith are profound. By seeking knowledge and acting upon it, we become individuals who are not only aware of the truth but also actively working to establish justice, promote righteousness, and contribute positively to society. Our actions become a reflection of our faith, and we become beacons of light in a world filled with darkness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us to acquire knowledge about the truth and then implement it in our actions. It emphasizes the importance of knowledge and action, as they are intertwined and essential for our salvation. By seeking knowledge, acting upon it, and embodying the truth in our lives, we establish a strong connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and become a source of guidance for others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to seek knowledge, act upon it, and be among those who are saved.
