(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Treacherous)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الخائِنُ لا وَفاءَ لَهُ۔

This translates to

The treacherous person has no loyalty in him.

In order to understand the meaning behind this statement, let us delve into the important words used in this Hadith.

The word (al-kha'in) "الخائِنُ" refers to a person who betrays the trust placed upon them. It signifies someone who deceives, breaks promises, and lacks loyalty. This treacherous behavior is condemned in Islam, as it goes against the principles of honesty, trustworthiness, and integrity that are emphasized in the Quran.

To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 177:

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.

This verse highlights the importance of fulfilling promises and being true to one's word. It emphasizes that true righteousness lies in fulfilling commitments and maintaining loyalty. Therefore, the treacherous person, who fails to uphold their promises and lacks loyalty, is far from righteousness.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 1, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.

This verse emphasizes the significance of fulfilling contracts and agreements. It serves as a reminder that betraying trust and breaking promises is not in line with the teachings of Islam.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,

The treacherous person has no loyalty in him,

serves as a profound reminder of the importance of trustworthiness and loyalty in the life of a Muslim. It highlights the negative consequences of betraying trust and breaking promises.

A treacherous person not only loses the trust of others but also tarnishes their own character and integrity. Their actions have far-reaching consequences, leading to broken relationships, damaged reputations, and a lack of credibility. Moreover, their treachery undermines the social fabric of the community, eroding the bonds of trust that hold society together.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a call to Muslims to uphold the values of honesty, trustworthiness, and loyalty. It reminds us of the importance of fulfilling our commitments, maintaining our promises, and being true to our word. By doing so, we not only strengthen our own character but also contribute to the well-being and harmony of our communities.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

The treacherous person has no loyalty in him

serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of trustworthiness and loyalty in Islam. It urges Muslims to fulfill their promises and maintain their commitments, as treachery and betrayal have no place in the life of a believer. Let us strive to embody these qualities and be true to our word, for it is through our actions that we truly reflect the teachings of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the strength to uphold our promises and maintain our loyalty.
