السَّخاءُ سَجِيَّةٌ، الشَّرَفُ مَزِيَّةٌ۔
Generosity is a [righteous] trait; honour is a virtue.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Generosity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Generosity is a [righteous] trait; honor is a virtue.
This impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of two noble qualities in a person's character: generosity and honor.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (سَخَاءُ) "sakhā" refers to generosity, which encompasses the act of giving freely and abundantly, without expecting anything in return. It is an attribute that reflects the selflessness and benevolence of a person. The word (سَجِيَّةٌ) "sajīyah" emphasizes that generosity is a praiseworthy quality that adorns an individual's character.
On the other hand, the word (شَرَفُ) "sharaf" denotes honor, dignity, and nobility. It signifies the elevated status of a person who possesses noble qualities and conducts themselves with integrity and righteousness. The word (مَزِيَّةٌ) "maziyyah" emphasizes that honor is a virtue that brings about excellence and distinction in an individual's character.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177),
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.
This verse highlights the importance of generosity as a righteous trait. It emphasizes that true righteousness lies not merely in performing outward rituals, but in believing in Allah and His messengers, and in displaying acts of kindness and charity towards others. Generosity, therefore, is an integral part of a believer's character, as it reflects their faith and devotion to Allah.
Furthermore, the Quran also emphasizes the significance of honor and dignity. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse highlights that true honor and nobility lie in righteousness and piety. It is not based on one's lineage, wealth, or worldly status, but on their character and conduct. The most honorable and noble person in the sight of Allah is the one who possesses righteousness and acts upon it.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that generosity and honor are not only praiseworthy qualities but also essential components of a believer's character. When a person is generous, they not only benefit others but also purify their own soul by detaching themselves from the love of material possessions. Similarly, when a person upholds honor and dignity, they inspire others and become a source of guidance and inspiration.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, emphasized the importance of these qualities in order to guide Muslims towards a path of righteousness. By embodying generosity and honor, we can strive to follow in the footsteps of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and attain closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah grant us the ability to cultivate these qualities within ourselves and may He bless us with the guidance to follow the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
