لاخَيْرَ فِي العَمَلِ إلاّ مَعَ العِلْمِ۔
There is no good in action except with knowledge.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لاخَيْرَ فِي العَمَلِ إلاّ مَعَ العِلْمِ
which translates to
There is no good in action except with knowledge.
This amazing Hadith emphasizes the importance of knowledge in our actions and serves as a reminder for Muslims to seek knowledge before engaging in any deed.
Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith. The word (khayr) "خَيْرَ" refers to goodness, righteousness, and virtue. It encompasses all actions that are pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and beneficial for oneself and others. The word (amal) "عَمَلِ" refers to any action or deed performed by an individual. And finally, the word (ilm) "عِلْمِ" signifies knowledge, understanding, and awareness.
To understand the significance of knowledge in our actions, we turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and its role in guiding our actions. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It implies that knowledge is a prerequisite for understanding and remembrance, which in turn leads to righteous actions.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah states,
He grants wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been granted wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding.
Here, Allah emphasizes that wisdom, which is attained through knowledge, is a great blessing. It is through wisdom that individuals are able to discern between right and wrong, and make informed decisions in their actions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder that knowledge is essential for our actions to be considered good and beneficial. Without knowledge, our actions may lack sincerity, proper understanding, and adherence to the teachings of Islam. Knowledge equips us with the necessary tools to navigate through life, make informed choices, and fulfill our obligations towards Allah and His creation.
For instance, when performing acts of worship such as prayer, fasting, or giving charity, it is crucial to have knowledge of the correct procedures, intentions, and etiquettes. Without this knowledge, our actions may be void of the desired spiritual and moral impact. Similarly, in matters of social interactions, knowledge enables us to make fair judgments, resolve conflicts, and promote justice and compassion.
Moreover, knowledge empowers individuals to seek personal growth, intellectual development, and contribute positively to society. It enables us to acquire skills, pursue careers, and make meaningful contributions in various fields. By seeking knowledge, we become better equipped to address the challenges and complexities of the modern world, while upholding our Islamic values and principles.
Conversely, the absence of knowledge can lead to ignorance, misunderstandings, and misguided actions. It can result in the propagation of false beliefs, harmful practices, and the perpetuation of injustice. Without knowledge, individuals may fall prey to superstitions, extremism, and manipulation by those who seek to exploit their ignorance.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to prioritize knowledge in their actions. It highlights the inseparable connection between knowledge and goodness, emphasizing that true righteousness can only be achieved through the acquisition and application of knowledge. By seeking knowledge, Muslims can enhance their understanding of Islam, strengthen their faith, and lead a life of purpose and righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to seek knowledge and apply it in our actions.
