Justice is the mainstay of the populace and the splendour of the rulers.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of justice in society. Let us delve into the exegesis of this impactful saying , exploring its meanings and implications in the light of the Quran.
The word (justice) "العدل" is derived from the root word "عدل" which means to be fair, equitable, and balanced. Justice is the foundation upon which a righteous society is built. It ensures that everyone is treated fairly and impartially, regardless of their social status, wealth, or power. Justice is not only a moral virtue but also a fundamental principle in Islam.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of justice in numerous verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah says,
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse highlights the obligation to establish justice even in times of conflict. It emphasizes the need to resolve disputes and restore harmony through fair and equitable means. Justice is not only about punishing the wrongdoer but also about rectifying the situation and ensuring that the oppressed are given their rights.
In Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah says,
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice, even if it goes against our personal interests or the interests of our loved ones. It reminds us that justice should not be compromised for any reason, as Allah is the ultimate judge and knows what is truly just.
Imam Ali's statement also highlights the role of justice in governance. The word (rulers) "الوُلاةِ" refers to those in positions of authority and leadership. The splendor and beauty of rulers lie in their ability to establish justice and ensure the well-being of their subjects. A just ruler is one who governs with fairness, compassion, and wisdom, upholding the rights of the people and protecting them from oppression.
In Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8), Allah says,
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse emphasizes the importance of justice in all aspects of our lives, including our interactions with others. It reminds us that justice should not be swayed by personal biases or animosity towards a particular group. True righteousness lies in upholding justice, even in the face of opposition or hatred.
Imam Ali's statement serves as a reminder to Muslims that justice is not only a lofty ideal but also a practical necessity for the well-being and prosperity of society. It encourages us to strive for justice in all our actions, whether as individuals or as leaders. By upholding justice, we contribute to the establishment of a just and equitable society, in line with the teachings of Islam.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to be just and fair in our dealings and grant us the ability to establish justice in our communities.
