Ingratitude for blessings makes one stumble and strips away the blessings.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Ingratitude)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Ingratitude for blessings makes one stumble and strips away the blessings.

This enlightening Hadith emphasizes the importance of recognizing and appreciating the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith. The word (kufran) "كُفْرانُ" refers to ingratitude or disbelief. It signifies the act of denying or rejecting the blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and failing to acknowledge His favors upon us. The word (ni'am) "نِعَمِ" refers to blessings or favors, encompassing both material and spiritual blessings that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon His creation. The word (yuzillu) "يُزِلُّ" means to stumble or slip, indicating the consequence of ingratitude. And the word (yaslubu) "يَسْلُبُ" means to strip away or take away, highlighting the loss of blessings resulting from ingratitude.

To further understand the significance of gratitude and its consequences, we turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7),

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'

This ayah emphasizes the direct correlation between gratitude and the increase in blessings from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we express gratitude for the blessings we have been granted, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises to bestow upon us even more. Conversely, ingratitude leads to a decrease in blessings and invites the punishment of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Another verse that sheds light on the consequences of ingratitude is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:83), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And when We bestow favor upon man, he turns away and distances himself; but when evil touches him, then he is full of extensive supplication.

This verse highlights the tendency of human beings to neglect and forget the blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) when they are bestowed upon them. However, when faced with adversity, they turn to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in desperate supplication. This serves as a reminder that ingratitude not only leads to the loss of blessings but also distances us from the source of all blessings, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we realize that ingratitude is a detrimental trait that can have severe consequences in our lives. When we fail to acknowledge and appreciate the blessings bestowed upon us, we stumble in our journey towards righteousness and lose the very blessings that were meant to elevate us.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the importance of gratitude. By expressing gratitude for the blessings we have, we not only preserve and increase them but also strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Gratitude is a fundamental aspect of faith that brings us closer to our Creator and enables us to navigate through life with humility and contentment.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to cultivate gratitude in their hearts. By recognizing and appreciating the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we not only avoid stumbling in our journey but also safeguard and enhance the blessings in our lives. Let us strive to be grateful Muslims, acknowledging and cherishing the countless blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in every aspect of our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be truly grateful and may He shower His blessings upon us all.
