Hadith #4042

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states,

For every religion there is a character and the character of faith is kindness.

This statement highlights the importance of possessing good character and emphasizes that kindness is the essence of true faith.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (deen) "دين" refers to religion, which encompasses a set of beliefs, practices, and values that guide individuals in their relationship with Allah and fellow human beings. The word (khuluq) "خُلُقٌ" means character or moral conduct. It refers to the innate disposition and behavior of an individual, which is shaped by their beliefs and values.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then specifically mentions the character of faith, stating that it is (rifq) "الرِّفْقُ", which can be translated as kindness, gentleness, or compassion. It implies that true faith is not merely a set of rituals or beliefs, but it is also reflected in one's behavior towards others.

The Quranic verses support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of kindness and good character in several verses. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah says, (Quran 17:29)

And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent. Indeed, your Lord extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. Indeed He is ever, concerning His servants, Acquainted and Seeing

This verse highlights the importance of being generous and kind towards others, as Allah is the ultimate provider and sustainer.

Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Hujurat, where Allah says, (Quran 49:13)

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted

This verse emphasizes the importance of recognizing and respecting the diversity of humanity and treating others with kindness and respect.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for all Muslims to embody kindness in their daily lives.
