Hadith #6120

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The cause of corruption of certitude is covetousness.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking Hadith in light of the Quran.

Firstly, let us understand the key words in this Hadith. "Fasad" refers to corruption or deviation from the right path, while "yaqeen" means certitude or firm belief. Lastly, "tamah" can be translated as covetousness or greed.

And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful].

And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection.

In this scenario, their certitude in the principles of justice and righteousness becomes corrupted. Their faith becomes hollow, as their actions contradict the teachings of Islam. They become blinded by their greed, losing sight of the true purpose of life and the importance of serving others.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, Muslims are reminded to guard against covetousness and greed. We should strive to cultivate contentment and gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By doing so, we can preserve our certitude and uphold the principles of justice and righteousness in our lives.
