— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العدل فضيلة السلطان" which translates to
Justice is a merit for the ruler.
This enlightening Hadith highlights the importance of justice in governance and leadership. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (adl) "عدل" in Arabic refers to justice, fairness, and equity. It is the act of giving each person their due rights and treating them impartially. Justice is a fundamental principle in Islam, emphasized throughout the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nisa (4:135),
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.
The word (fadilah) "فضيلة" in Arabic means merit or virtue. It signifies a quality or characteristic that is commendable and praiseworthy. In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that justice is not just a duty of the ruler, but it is also a virtue that elevates their status and brings them closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of justice in society. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse highlights the obligation to establish justice even in times of conflict. It emphasizes the importance of resolving disputes and conflicts through fair and just means. It also demonstrates that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) loves those who act justly, further emphasizing the virtue of justice.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, understood the significance of justice in governance. He believed that a ruler who upholds justice not only fulfills their duty but also earns a higher status in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By ruling with justice, a leader ensures the well-being and harmony of their subjects, fostering a just and equitable society.
When a ruler practices justice, it motivates others to do the same. It sets an example for the entire community, promoting fairness and equality. Conversely, when a ruler fails to uphold justice, it leads to corruption, oppression, and societal unrest. The consequences of injustice are far-reaching, affecting the lives of individuals and the stability of the entire society.
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded of the importance of justice in all aspects of life. Whether in positions of authority or in our personal interactions, we should strive to be just and fair. By doing so, we not only fulfill our obligations as Muslims but also earn the virtue and favor of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all to uphold justice and establish a just society.
