الظّالِمُ مَلُومٌ۔
The unjust is blameworthy.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Unjust)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الظّالِمُ مَلُومٌ۔" which translates to
The unjust is blameworthy.
This concise statement carries deep meaning and serves as a reminder for all Muslims to uphold justice in their actions and dealings.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of its key words. The term (unjust) "ظّالِمُ" refers to someone who transgresses the boundaries of fairness and righteousness, oppressing others and causing harm. This includes any act of injustice, whether it be physical, emotional, or financial. The word (blameworthy) "مَلُومٌ۔" signifies that the unjust person is deserving of blame and reproach for their actions.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of justice in numerous verses, affirming it as a fundamental principle of Islam. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9),
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse highlights the obligation upon Muslims to establish justice and resolve conflicts in a fair and equitable manner. It also emphasizes the importance of standing against oppression and striving for justice, even if it means taking necessary measures to rectify the situation.
Another verse that supports the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is found in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice, even if it goes against one's personal interests or familial ties. It reminds Muslims to be just and truthful witnesses, regardless of the consequences, for Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is fully aware of our actions.
Reflecting upon the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the supporting Quranic verses, we realize the profound impact that injustice can have on individuals and society as a whole. When injustice prevails, it breeds resentment, division, and chaos. Conversely, when justice is upheld, it fosters harmony, unity, and peace.
The consequences of injustice are far-reaching. It not only harms the victims but also tarnishes the reputation of the perpetrator. The blameworthiness of the unjust person is not limited to this world alone; it extends to the Hereafter, where they will be held accountable for their actions before Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us through this Hadith that justice is a fundamental principle of Islam. It is our duty as Muslims to strive for justice in all aspects of our lives, treating others with fairness, compassion, and respect. By doing so, we not only fulfill our obligations as believers but also contribute to the establishment of a just and harmonious society.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to uphold justice and protect us from the path of injustice. May He grant us the wisdom and strength to stand against oppression and work towards a world filled with justice and righteousness.
