أفْضَلُ الذُّخْرِ اَلهُدى۔
The best reserve is true guidance.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: True Guidance From Allah)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The best reserve is true guidance.
This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (dhukhr) "ذُّخْرِ" in Arabic refers to a reserve or a treasure. It signifies something that is valuable and can be relied upon in times of need. In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of having the best and most valuable reserve, which is (al-huda) "الهُدى" - true guidance.
The word (al-huda) "الهُدى" is derived from the root word (hada) "هَدَى", which means to guide or to lead. In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes guidance as a great blessing and a source of success. For example, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:256), Allah says,
There is no compulsion in religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong.
This verse highlights the importance of true guidance, which is based on knowledge, understanding, and conviction.
True guidance is not limited to mere knowledge; it encompasses the application of that knowledge in one's life. It involves following the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) with sincerity and devotion. True guidance leads to righteousness, piety, and the fulfillment of one's purpose in life.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the significance of seeking and adhering to true guidance. In Surah Al-Fatiha (1:6-7), we recite,
Guide us to the straight path - the path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking guidance from Allah and following the path of those who have been blessed by Him.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-An'am (6:71), Allah says,
Say, 'Shall we invoke instead of Allah that which neither benefits us nor harms us and be turned back on our heels after Allah has guided us?'
This verse emphasizes the futility of seeking guidance from anyone other than Allah. It reminds us that true guidance can only come from the Creator Himself.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, highlights the significance of true guidance as the best reserve. Just as a reserve provides security and support in times of need, true guidance serves as a constant source of strength and direction in our lives. It helps us navigate through the challenges and trials we face, ensuring that we remain steadfast on the straight path.
When we possess true guidance, we are equipped with the knowledge and understanding to make informed decisions. We are able to distinguish between right and wrong, good and evil. True guidance empowers us to live a life of purpose, fulfilling our obligations towards Allah and our fellow human beings.
Moreover, true guidance has far-reaching consequences. It not only benefits us individually but also has a positive impact on society as a whole. When Muslims embody true guidance in their actions and interactions, they become beacons of light, spreading goodness and righteousness. They become role models for others, inspiring them to seek and embrace true guidance as well.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we are reminded of the importance of constantly seeking and adhering to true guidance. It is through true guidance that we find solace, purpose, and success in this world and the Hereafter. May Allah grant us the ability to seek and follow true guidance, and may He bless us with His mercy and guidance in all aspects of our lives.
