ما مِنْ عَمَل أحَبَّ إلَى اللّهِ تَعالى مِنْ ضُرّ يَكْشِفُهُ رَجْلٌ عَنْ رَجُل۔
No action is more beloved to Allah, the Most High, than for a person to remove the distress [and adversity] from another person.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Revealing & Removing Distress)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
No action is more beloved to Allah, the Most High, than for a person to remove the distress [and adversity] from another person.
This enlightening saying emphasizes the importance of helping others and alleviating their suffering. Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The key words in this Hadith are (distress) "ضُرّ" and (to remove) "يَكْشِفُهُ". The term "ضُرّ" refers to any form of hardship, adversity, or distress that a person may be facing. It encompasses physical, emotional, and spiritual difficulties. On the other hand, "يَكْشِفُهُ" means to remove or alleviate this distress. It implies taking proactive measures to help someone in need and to bring them relief.
The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of helping others and alleviating their suffering. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 177:
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves.
This verse highlights the importance of giving to those in need and helping them overcome their difficulties.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'un, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) condemns those who neglect the basic needs of others. He says,
So woe to those who pray but are heedless of their prayer - those who make show [of their deeds] and withhold [simple] assistance.
This verse serves as a reminder that true faith is not limited to mere rituals but also encompasses actively assisting those in distress.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reflects his deep understanding of the Quranic teachings. He highlights the significance of selflessness and compassion in Islam. By removing the distress of others, we not only fulfill a noble act but also gain the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This Hadith encourages Muslims to be proactive in helping those in need and to actively seek opportunities to alleviate their suffering.
The consequences of acting upon this Hadith are profound. When we selflessly help others, we not only alleviate their distress but also strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and unity within the Muslim community. By embodying the teachings of Islam, we become a source of inspiration for others and contribute to the betterment of society as a whole. Moreover, our actions serve as a means of purification and spiritual growth, as we strive to emulate the noble qualities of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
Reflecting upon this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of empathy and compassion in our daily lives. It urges us to actively seek out opportunities to alleviate the distress of others, whether it be through financial assistance, emotional support, or simply lending a listening ear. By doing so, we not only fulfill a beloved action in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) but also contribute to the establishment of a just and compassionate society.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody the teachings of this Hadith and to be a source of relief for those in distress. May He bless us with the strength and compassion to actively help others and to make a positive difference in the lives of those around us.
