(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of remembrance of Allah (ذِكْرُ اللّهِ) in purifying the hearts and bringing tranquility to them. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking saying in light of the Quran.
The Arabic word (dhikr) "ذِكْرُ" means remembrance, mention, or invocation. It encompasses various forms of remembering Allah, such as reciting His names and attributes, praising Him, seeking His forgiveness, and reflecting upon His signs. The word (jalā') "جَلاءُ" means polishing or shining, while (ṣudūr) "الصُّدُورِ" refers to the chests or breasts. Thus, the Hadith conveys that the remembrance of Allah polishes and purifies the hearts, removing any impurities or darkness within them.
The word (ṭumāninah) "طُمَأْنِينَةُ" in the Hadith translates to tranquility, serenity, or peace. It signifies a state of inner calmness and contentment that is attained through the remembrance of Allah. When the hearts are filled with the remembrance of Allah, they find solace and tranquility, free from anxiety, fear, and restlessness.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support the impactful message of this Hadith. For instance, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ar-Ra'd (13:28):
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts are assured.
This verse highlights the direct correlation between faith, the remembrance of Allah, and the assurance of hearts. When believers engage in the remembrance of Allah, their hearts find tranquility and certainty.
Additionally, in Surah Ar-Rad (13:28), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.
This verse further emphasizes that true peace and tranquility can only be found through the remembrance of Allah. It is through this remembrance that hearts find solace and are relieved of any distress or unease.
The exegesis of this Hadith teaches us the profound impact that the remembrance of Allah has on our hearts and souls. When we engage in the remembrance of Allah, we are actively polishing and purifying our hearts, removing any impurities or negative traits. This process allows us to attain a state of tranquility, where our hearts find peace and contentment.
Moreover, the remembrance of Allah serves as a means of strengthening our faith and connection with Him. It reminds us of His presence, His blessings, and His guidance. Through this remembrance, we become more conscious of our actions and strive to align ourselves with His will.
The consequences of neglecting the remembrance of Allah are evident in the restlessness and dissatisfaction that often plague our hearts. When we distance ourselves from the remembrance of Allah, our hearts become susceptible to the distractions and temptations of this world. This leads to a state of inner turmoil, as our hearts yearn for the tranquility that can only be found in the remembrance of Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the profound impact of the remembrance of Allah on our hearts and souls. Through this remembrance, our hearts are polished and purified, and we attain a state of tranquility and peace. Let us strive to engage in the remembrance of Allah regularly, for it is through this practice that we can find true contentment and draw closer to our Creator. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to remember Him and find tranquility in His remembrance.
