Hadith #6339

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

حُسْنُ الظَّنِّ مِنْ أفْضَلِ السَّجايا، وأجْزَلِ العَطايا۔

This can be translated as,

Thinking positive is one of the best attributes and the most bountiful gifts.

The word (husn) "حُسْنُ" means goodness, beauty, or excellence. It refers to the quality of something being good or positive. The word (dhann) "ظَّنِّ" means to think, assume, or have an opinion. In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages believers to have a positive mindset and think well of others. Allah says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12),

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nur (24:15), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises the believers,

When you heard it [i.e., the false accusation], why did not the believing men and believing women think good of one another and say, 'This is an obvious falsehood'?
