مَنْ تَفَقَّهَ فِي الدّينِ كَثُرَ۔
One who becomes learned in religion increases [his prosperity].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Religion And Sharia Law)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ تَفَقَّهَ فِي الدّينِ كَثُرَ۔
This can be translated as,
One who becomes learned in religion increases [his prosperity].
Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quranic teachings.
The word (tafaqqaha) "تَفَقَّهَ" in this Hadith is derived from the root word (faqaha) "فَقَهَ", which means to understand, comprehend, or gain knowledge. In the context of religion, it refers to acquiring deep knowledge and understanding of the principles and teachings of Islam. It goes beyond mere superficial knowledge and encompasses a comprehensive understanding of the faith.
To understand the significance of becoming learned in religion, we turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Zumar, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 39:9)
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who do not. It emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding in order to attain a higher level of consciousness and remembrance of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 35:28)
It is only those who have knowledge among His servants that fear Allah.
This verse emphasizes that true fear and consciousness of Allah can only be achieved through knowledge. It is through deep understanding of the religion that one develops a sense of awe and reverence for the Creator.
Now, let us reflect on the consequences and benefits of becoming learned in religion. When a person acquires knowledge and understanding of Islam, it leads to spiritual growth, intellectual development, and moral refinement. It enables individuals to make informed decisions, distinguish between right and wrong, and navigate the complexities of life in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
Moreover, becoming learned in religion empowers individuals to fulfill their obligations and responsibilities as Muslims. It equips them with the tools to propagate the message of Islam, defend the faith, and contribute positively to society. It also enables them to guide others towards the path of righteousness and establish justice in the world.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the importance of becoming learned in religion. His profound understanding of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) made him a beacon of guidance for Muslims throughout history. His knowledge not only elevated his own status but also served as a source of inspiration for generations to come.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of acquiring deep knowledge and understanding of religion. It highlights the correlation between knowledge and prosperity, not only in the material sense but also in terms of spiritual growth and moral development. As Muslims, it is incumbent upon us to seek knowledge, reflect upon the Quran, and strive to become learned in religion, for it is through knowledge that we can truly prosper and fulfill our purpose in this world. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to acquire knowledge and benefit from it in both this life and the hereafter.
