رَأْسُ الجَهْلِ الجَوْرُ۔
The cornerstone of ignorance is oppression.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Injustice And Oppression)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The cornerstone of ignorance is oppression.
This enlightening saying highlights the relationship between ignorance and oppression, emphasizing that oppression is the foundation upon which ignorance thrives.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (جَهْلِ) "jahl" refers to ignorance or lack of knowledge. It is the state of being unaware or uninformed about a particular matter. The word (جَوْرُ) "jawr" means oppression or injustice. It signifies the act of transgressing the rights of others, causing harm, and denying justice.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and verifying information before taking any action. It warns against causing harm to others due to ignorance, which can lead to regret and injustice.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:275), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, 'Trade is [just] like interest.' But Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest.
This verse highlights the consequences of ignorance and oppression. Those who engage in usury, driven by their ignorance and disregard for the divine laws, will face severe punishment in the hereafter.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that ignorance and oppression are intertwined. Ignorance can lead to oppression, as individuals who lack knowledge may act unjustly towards others. On the other hand, oppression can perpetuate ignorance, as it suppresses the dissemination of knowledge and stifles intellectual growth.
For example, in societies where certain groups are oppressed and denied access to education, ignorance becomes prevalent. This ignorance then perpetuates the cycle of oppression, as the oppressed are unable to challenge and overcome their circumstances due to their lack of knowledge.
Conversely, knowledge and understanding serve as a powerful tool against oppression. When individuals are equipped with knowledge, they are better able to recognize and resist oppression. They can advocate for justice, challenge oppressive systems, and work towards creating a more equitable society.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to seek knowledge and strive for justice. It calls upon us to reject ignorance and oppression in all their forms. By acquiring knowledge, understanding our rights and responsibilities, and standing against injustice, we can break the cycle of ignorance and oppression.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that ignorance and oppression are deeply interconnected. Ignorance can lead to oppression, and oppression perpetuates ignorance. It is our duty as Muslims to seek knowledge, challenge injustice, and strive for a just society. By doing so, we can break the cycle of ignorance and oppression, and establish a world guided by knowledge, justice, and compassion. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to uphold these principles.
