مَنْ تَطَلَّعَ عَلى أسْرارِ جارِهِ اِنْهَتَكَتْ أسْتارُهُ۔
One who seeks to learn about the secrets of his neighbour, his [own] curtains [of secrets] are torn apart.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Flaws And Faults)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who seeks to learn about the secrets of his neighbor, his [own] curtains [of secrets] are torn apart.
This enlightening Hadith highlights the consequences of prying into the private affairs of others. To fully understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of its key words.
The term (tatalla'a) "تَطَلَّعَ" means to seek knowledge or to inquire about something. In this context, it refers to someone who actively seeks to uncover the secrets or private matters of their neighbor. The word (asrar) "أسْرارِ" refers to the hidden or confidential matters that individuals may keep to themselves. Lastly, (inhatkat) "اِنْهَتَكَتْ" means to tear apart or destroy.
To support the exegesis of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12),
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding assumptions and spying on others. It warns against indulging in negative assumptions about our fellow Muslims, as it can lead to sin. Spying on others is condemned, as it violates their privacy and trust. The analogy of eating the flesh of one's brother when dead is used to illustrate the repulsiveness of such actions.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse highlights the importance of respecting the dignity and honor of others. It advises against ridiculing or insulting others, as it goes against the principles of faith. Calling each other by offensive nicknames is also condemned. These teachings emphasize the need for Muslims to treat one another with kindness, respect, and empathy.
In light of these Quranic verses, we can understand the wise message conveyed in the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Seeking to uncover the secrets of our neighbors not only violates their privacy but also exposes our own vulnerabilities. Just as prying into the affairs of others is condemned in the Quran, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the consequences of such actions.
When we engage in gossip, backbiting, or spying on others, we not only harm their reputation but also damage our own integrity. Our own secrets and vulnerabilities become exposed, and our own "curtains" of privacy are torn apart. This Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims to respect the boundaries of others and to focus on self-improvement rather than prying into the lives of our neighbors.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to cultivate a culture of trust, respect, and empathy within our communities. Instead of seeking to uncover the secrets of others, let us focus on building strong relationships based on mutual understanding and support. By doing so, we can create an environment where individuals feel safe to share their struggles and seek guidance without fear of judgment or exposure.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to respect the privacy and dignity of others. It warns against prying into the secrets of our neighbors and highlights the consequences of such actions. By adhering to the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), we can foster a community that values trust, empathy, and respect. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in embodying these virtues and protect us from engaging in harmful behaviors.
