Hadith #8968

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The bane of speech is prolongation.

This concise statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (afeh) "آفَةُ" in Arabic refers to a bane, a harmful or destructive element. It signifies something that brings about negative consequences or leads to harm. The word (al-kalam) "الكَلامِ" means speech or words. And finally, (al-ittala) "الإطالَةُ" translates to prolongation or excessive length.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Isra, verse 36,

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight, and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.

This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking only about matters that we have knowledge of. Prolonging our speech without knowledge can lead to spreading falsehoods, creating confusion, and causing harm to ourselves and others.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 6, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

This verse highlights the significance of verifying information before spreading it. It cautions against the dangers of hasty speech and the potential harm it can cause.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the importance of brevity and precision in our speech. It encourages us to avoid unnecessary elaboration and verbosity. By doing so, we can minimize the risk of miscommunication, misunderstandings, and unintended consequences.

Excessive speech can lead to various negative outcomes. It can lead to the spreading of rumors, backbiting, and slander, which are all condemned in Islam. The Quran states in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 12,

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of guarding our tongues and refraining from engaging in harmful speech.

Moreover, excessive speech can also lead to wasting time and energy, diverting our focus from more productive endeavors. The Quran reminds us in Surah Al-Mu'minun, verse 3,

And who turn away from ill speech.

This verse encourages us to abstain from engaging in vain and idle talk.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) impactful saying serves as a reminder for all Muslims to be mindful of the words we utter. It urges us to speak with purpose, clarity, and brevity. By doing so, we can foster better communication, avoid unnecessary conflicts, and promote harmony within our communities.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),

The bane of speech is prolongation,
