اَلْمَرْءُ اِبْنُ ساعَتِهِ۔
Man is the son of his time.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Social Interaction And Mingling)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Man is the son of his time.
This concise statement holds profound wisdom and offers valuable insights into the nature of human beings and the influence of their surroundings.
Let us begin by examining the key words in this Hadith. The Arabic word (al-mar'u) "اَلْمَرْءُ" refers to "man" or "human being." It encompasses both men and women, emphasizing the universal nature of this statement. The word (ibn) "اِبْنُ" means "son" or "offspring," indicating a close relationship between an individual and their time. Lastly, (saa'atihi) "ساعَتِهِ" translates to "his time" or "his era."
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3),
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This Quranic verse highlights the significance of time in the life of every individual. It reminds us that time is a precious resource, and it is our responsibility to utilize it wisely. The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further emphasizes this notion by stating that man is inherently shaped by the era in which they live.
When we reflect upon this Hadith, we realize that our actions, beliefs, and values are influenced by the circumstances and environment in which we find ourselves. Our thoughts and behaviors are molded by the prevailing ideologies, social norms, and cultural practices of our time. Just as a child inherits physical traits from their parents, we inherit the characteristics of our era.
For instance, consider the impact of technology on our lives today. The rapid advancements in communication and information have transformed the way we interact, learn, and perceive the world. Our thoughts and behaviors are shaped by the digital age, with its unique challenges and opportunities. Similarly, throughout history, different eras have witnessed distinct cultural, political, and intellectual movements that have left a lasting impact on society.
However, it is important to note that while our time influences us, we also have the power to shape our time. As Muslims, we are guided by the timeless principles of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). These divine sources provide us with a moral compass and a framework for righteous action, regardless of the prevailing trends or ideologies of our era.
In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse reminds us that our worth and honor lie not in our lineage or the era we belong to, but in our piety and righteousness. Regardless of the challenges and temptations of our time, it is our duty to adhere to the teachings of Islam and strive for moral excellence. By doing so, we can transcend the limitations of our era and leave a positive impact on society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
Man is the son of his time
serves as a reminder of the profound influence that our surroundings and era have on our thoughts, actions, and beliefs. It urges us to be mindful of the values and ideologies prevalent in our time while remaining steadfast in our commitment to the timeless principles of Islam. By understanding the dynamics between ourselves and our era, we can navigate the challenges of our time with wisdom, integrity, and a steadfast devotion to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah guide us all on the straight path and enable us to be righteous individuals who positively impact our time and leave a lasting legacy.
