(Ghurar al-Hikam: Nobleness And Munificence)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الكرم بذل الجود، وإنجاز الموعود

which translates to

Munificence is [in] giving generously and fulfilling promises.

Let us delve into the profound meanings of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (al-karam) "الكرم" in this Hadith refers to munificence or generosity. It signifies the act of giving abundantly and selflessly, without expecting anything in return. This quality is highly esteemed in Islam and is encouraged by the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261),

The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

This verse emphasizes the immense rewards and blessings that await those who give generously for the sake of Allah.

The word (budhl) "بذل" in the Hadith means to give or bestow. It implies the act of selflessly offering what one possesses, whether it be wealth, time, or resources, for the benefit of others. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages this act of giving in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),

And say: 'My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance and to exit a sound exit and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority.'

This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's support and assistance, which can be attained through acts of generosity and giving.

The word (al-jood) "الجود" in the Hadith refers to the act of giving generously. It signifies going beyond the minimum requirements and giving more than what is expected. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) praises the quality of generosity in Surah Al-Hashr (59:9),

And [also for] those who were settled in the Home [i.e., Al-Madinah] and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.

This verse exemplifies the selflessness and generosity of the Ansar (the residents of Madinah) who welcomed and supported the Muhajirun (the emigrants from Makkah).

The phrase (injaz al-mu'ood) "إنجاز الموعود" in the Hadith means fulfilling promises. It emphasizes the importance of honoring one's commitments and obligations. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the significance of fulfilling promises in Surah Al-Isra (17:34),

And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.

This verse reminds Muslims of the importance of upholding their promises and fulfilling their obligations, as they will be held accountable for their actions on the Day of Judgment.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith highlights the virtues of munificence and fulfilling promises. By giving generously, we emulate the example set by Allah and His Messenger (), who are the epitome of generosity. Fulfilling promises demonstrates our integrity and reliability, qualities that are highly regarded in Islam.

Practicing munificence and fulfilling promises have profound consequences. When we give generously, we not only benefit others but also purify our souls and increase our closeness to Allah. By fulfilling promises, we establish trust and strengthen our relationships with others. These qualities reflect the character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. He exemplified the teachings of the Quran through his actions and was a role model for all Muslims.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the virtues of munificence and fulfilling promises. It encourages Muslims to give generously and selflessly, without expecting anything in return, and to honor their commitments and obligations. These qualities are deeply rooted in the teachings of the Quran and are exemplified by the noble character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody these virtues and follow in the footsteps of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
