Obedience is the shield of the masses and justice is the shield of the [rulers of] nations.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Important Events)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Obedience is the shield of the masses and justice is the shield of the [rulers of] nations.
This thought-provoking Hadith highlights the importance of obedience and justice in society. Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith and explore their significance in light of the Quran.
The word (ta'ah) "طاعة" translates to "obedience" in English. Obedience refers to following the commands and guidance of those in authority, whether it be religious or worldly. In the context of this Hadith, it emphasizes the importance of obeying the rightful leaders and rulers. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the significance of obedience to Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ). Allah says in Surah Al-Imran (3:32),
Say, 'Obey Allah and the Messenger.' But if they turn away - then indeed, Allah does not like the disbelievers.
Obedience to Allah and His Messenger is not only a duty but also a means of protection and guidance for the masses.
The word (junnah) "جنة" translates to "shield" in English. A shield is a protective barrier that safeguards against harm and danger. In this Hadith, it symbolizes the role of obedience and justice in shielding and preserving the well-being of society. Just as a shield protects an individual from physical harm, obedience and justice protect the masses and nations from moral and social decay.
Moving on to the second part of the Hadith, the word (adl) "عدل" translates to "justice" in English. Justice is the cornerstone of a just and equitable society. It refers to treating others fairly, upholding rights, and ensuring equality. The Quran emphasizes the importance of justice in numerous verses. Allah says in Surah An-Nisa (4:135),
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.
Justice is not only a responsibility of rulers but also a duty of every individual. It is through justice that nations thrive and prosper.
The Hadith highlights the interdependence of obedience and justice in society. Obedience to rightful leaders ensures stability and order, while justice ensures fairness and equality. When obedience is coupled with justice, it creates an environment where the rights of the masses are protected, and the rulers govern with integrity and righteousness.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, making his words highly valuable and insightful. His emphasis on obedience and justice serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for a just society, where obedience to rightful authority and the establishment of justice go hand in hand.
The consequences of neglecting obedience and justice are evident throughout history. Societies that lack obedience to rightful leaders and justice suffer from chaos, oppression, and corruption. Conversely, when obedience and justice are upheld, societies flourish, and individuals thrive in an environment of peace and prosperity.
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded of their duty to obey Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), as well as the rightful leaders appointed over them. They are also reminded of the importance of upholding justice in their personal lives and in society as a whole. By doing so, they contribute to the well-being and prosperity of their communities, following the example set by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the teachings of the Quran.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be obedient to Him and His Messenger (ﷺ), and may He grant us the ability to establish justice in our lives and societies.
