مَنْ عُرِفَ بِالصِّدْقِ جازَ كِذْبُهُ۔
Whoever is known for his truthfulness, his lies are [also] accepted.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Truthfulness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble family, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ عُرِفَ بِالصِّدْقِ جازَ كِذْبُهُ۔
This can be translated as,
Whoever is known for his truthfulness, his lies are [also] accepted.
This amazing Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of establishing a reputation for truthfulness and integrity.
Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (known) "عُرِفَ" comes from the root word "عَرَفَ" which means to be recognized or acknowledged. It implies that one's character and conduct are well-known and established among others. The word (for his truthfulness) "بِالصِّدْقِ" refers to the quality of being truthful, honest, and sincere in one's words and actions. It encompasses speaking the truth, fulfilling promises, and being trustworthy.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that when a person is known for their truthfulness, their lies are accepted. This does not mean that lying is permissible or encouraged. Rather, it highlights the significance of a person's reputation for truthfulness in influencing how others perceive their occasional lapses in truth.
To understand the wisdom behind this statement, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6),
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information before passing judgment or taking action. When a person is known for their truthfulness, others are more likely to give them the benefit of the doubt and investigate the veracity of their statements.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us the importance of truthfulness in various contexts. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8),
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes the importance of truthfulness and justice, even if it goes against our personal interests or relationships.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder that a person's reputation for truthfulness carries weight and can influence how others perceive their words and actions. When someone consistently demonstrates honesty and integrity, their occasional mistakes or lapses in truth are more likely to be seen as exceptions rather than the norm. This highlights the importance of cultivating a character that is rooted in truthfulness and sincerity.
Moreover, this Hadith encourages us to reflect on the consequences of our words and actions. When we establish a reputation for truthfulness, we become accountable for our words and are more cautious about the impact they may have on others. This fosters a sense of responsibility and integrity in our interactions with others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the significance of being known for our truthfulness. It reminds us that our reputation for honesty and integrity influences how others perceive our occasional lapses in truth. By consistently embodying truthfulness, we cultivate a character that is rooted in sincerity and accountability. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be people of truth and integrity in all aspects of our lives.
