اَلمُرُوءَةُ تَمْنَعُ مِنْ كُلِّ دَنِيَّة۔
Magnanimity prevents every vileness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Magnanimity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
المروة تمنع من كل دنية
which translates to
Magnanimity prevents every vileness.
This wise utterance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of possessing the virtue of magnanimity in order to avoid all forms of moral degradation and wickedness.
The word (al-muruwwah) "المروة" refers to magnanimity, nobility, and generosity. It encompasses the qualities of being honorable, dignified, and having a noble character. It is the opposite of being petty, mean-spirited, and indulging in base desires. Magnanimity is a virtue that elevates the human soul and prevents it from descending into the depths of moral degradation.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Isra (17:37), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.
This verse reminds us of the importance of humility and modesty, which are essential components of magnanimity. When one possesses magnanimity, they do not walk upon the earth with arrogance and pride, but rather with humility and a sense of gratitude towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:83), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.
This verse emphasizes that those who possess magnanimity do not seek worldly power, status, or corruption. Instead, they strive for righteousness and seek the eternal abode of the Hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the profound impact that magnanimity can have on an individual's character and actions. When one possesses magnanimity, they are able to rise above petty desires and temptations that may lead to vileness and moral degradation. Magnanimity acts as a shield, protecting individuals from engaging in acts that are harmful to themselves and others.
For example, a person with magnanimity would not engage in backbiting or spreading rumors about others. They would not seek revenge or hold grudges against those who have wronged them. Instead, they would forgive and show kindness, understanding that forgiveness and compassion are the hallmarks of a noble character.
Moreover, magnanimity also extends to one's interactions with society. A magnanimous person would not exploit others for personal gain or engage in dishonest practices. They would be fair and just in their dealings, treating others with respect and dignity. They would use their resources and influence to uplift and empower those around them, rather than oppressing or exploiting them.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of possessing magnanimity in order to prevent vileness and moral degradation. Magnanimity is a virtue that elevates the human soul and enables individuals to rise above base desires and temptations. By embodying magnanimity, we can cultivate a noble character and contribute positively to society, striving for righteousness and seeking the eternal abode of the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody magnanimity in our lives and protect us from all forms of vileness.
