(Ghurar al-Hikam: Opportunity And Its Loss)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

رُبَّ فائِت لايُدْرَكُ لِحاقُهُ۔

This can be translated to mean:

Many a lost thing is such that it cannot be regained.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. The word (fa'it) "فائِت" refers to something that has been lost or missed. It implies the loss of an opportunity, a chance, or a moment that has passed by. The word (layudraku) "لايُدْرَكُ" means that it cannot be attained or regained. It signifies the inability to recover what has been lost or missed.

This Hadith highlights the importance of seizing opportunities and making the most of the present moment. It serves as a reminder that time is a precious resource that once lost, cannot be regained. It urges Muslims to be mindful of the fleeting nature of life and to make the best use of the opportunities presented to them.

The Quran provides numerous verses that support the wisdom behind this Hadith. For instance, in Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse emphasizes the importance of utilizing time wisely and engaging in righteous actions.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:8), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse highlights the significance of treating others with fairness and justice, as opportunities to do so may not always be present.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a powerful reminder to Muslims of the consequences of neglecting opportunities and failing to make the most of the present moment. It encourages believers to be proactive, seize opportunities, and strive for excellence in all aspects of life.

For example, if a person has the opportunity to seek knowledge, they should not delay or procrastinate, as knowledge is a valuable asset that once missed, may not be easily regained. Similarly, if an individual has the chance to perform acts of kindness or help those in need, they should not hesitate, as the opportunity to make a positive impact may not present itself again.

This Hadith also highlights the importance of reflection and self-awareness. Muslims are encouraged to regularly assess their actions and seize opportunities for self-improvement. By recognizing the value of time and the consequences of missed opportunities, believers can strive to make the most of every moment and fulfill their responsibilities towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and their fellow human beings.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to seize opportunities and make the most of the present moment. It emphasizes the importance of utilizing time wisely and engaging in righteous actions. By reflecting on the fleeting nature of life and the consequences of missed opportunities, believers can strive to live a purposeful and fulfilling life, seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and benefiting themselves and others in the process. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to recognize and seize the opportunities that come our way.
