(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ عَدَلَ فِي البِلادِ نَشَرَ اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ الرَّحْمَةَ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of justice in society and the divine reward that awaits those who act justly in the lands.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (adala) "عَدَلَ" refers to acting with justice, fairness, and equity. It encompasses treating others with equality, ensuring their rights are upheld, and refraining from any form of oppression or injustice. The term (al-bilad) "البِلادِ" refers to the lands or territories where individuals reside, indicating that justice should be practiced in all places and among all people.
To further comprehend the significance of justice in Islam, we turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Hadid (57:25),
Indeed, We sent Our messengers with clear proofs and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice.
This verse highlights that the messengers were sent with the divine scripture and the balance of justice, emphasizing the importance of justice in maintaining societal harmony.
Additionally, in Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands the believers,
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives.
This verse emphasizes the obligation of Muslims to uphold justice, even if it goes against their own interests or the interests of their loved ones. It further highlights the importance of justice in all aspects of life.
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of this Hadith. When individuals act with justice, they contribute to the establishment of a just society, where everyone's rights are protected and respected. This leads to social harmony, peace, and the overall well-being of the community. Conversely, the absence of justice breeds oppression, inequality, and discord.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a motivation for Muslims to strive for justice in their personal lives, interactions, and societal roles. It encourages them to be fair and equitable in their dealings, to stand up against injustice, and to work towards creating a just society.
The consequences of acting justly are far-reaching. On an individual level, it brings inner peace, contentment, and the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). On a societal level, it fosters unity, cooperation, and a sense of collective responsibility. Moreover, the divine reward promised in this Hadith, the unfolding of Allah's mercy, is a testament to the immense value and significance of justice in Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of justice in society. It urges them to act justly in the lands, promising the unfolding of Allah's mercy upon those who do so. By upholding justice, Muslims contribute to the establishment of a just society, fostering peace, harmony, and the overall well-being of the community.
