Staying clear of vile traits is from the completeness of magnanimity.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Magnanimity)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure family, his noble companions, and all those who follow their righteous path.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Staying clear of vile traits is from the completeness of magnanimity.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of avoiding negative qualities and behaviors as an essential aspect of true magnanimity and nobility.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (tamam) "تَمَام" refers to completeness or perfection, while (al-muruwwah) "المُرُوَّة" signifies magnanimity, nobility, and high moral character. The term (tanazzuhu) "التَّنَزُّهُ" means to stay clear or abstain from something, and (ad-duniyyah) "الدَّنِيَّةِ" refers to worldly matters or materialism.

To comprehend the essence of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of purifying our souls from negative traits and behaviors. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:199), Allah says,

Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.

This verse encourages us to abstain from ignorance and to promote goodness.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:8), Allah commands the believers,

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse highlights the importance of treating others with fairness and justice, even if they hold different beliefs.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) aligns perfectly with these Quranic teachings. It teaches us that true magnanimity and nobility lie in staying clear of negative traits and behaviors. By avoiding vices such as arrogance, jealousy, greed, and dishonesty, we can attain a higher level of moral excellence.

For instance, let us consider the trait of arrogance. Arrogance is a vile quality that stems from a sense of superiority and pride. It leads to the mistreatment of others and a disregard for their rights. However, a person who possesses true magnanimity will humble themselves and treat others with respect and kindness, regardless of their social status or background.

Similarly, the trait of jealousy is detrimental to one's character. It breeds feelings of resentment and animosity towards others, causing harm to oneself and others. On the other hand, a person who embodies true magnanimity will celebrate the success and achievements of others, supporting and encouraging them rather than harboring envy.

By abstaining from such negative traits, we not only improve our own character but also contribute to a more harmonious and just society. Our actions have a ripple effect, influencing those around us and inspiring them to also strive for moral excellence.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that true magnanimity and nobility lie in staying clear of negative traits and behaviors. By purifying our souls from vices and striving for moral excellence, we can fulfill our purpose as Muslims and contribute to a more virtuous society. May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to embody these qualities and seek His pleasure.
