مَنْ أَسْرَعَ إِلَى النَّاسِ بِمَا يَكْرَهُونَ، قَالُوا فِيهِ [ب] ما لاَ يَعْلَمُونَ۔
If someone is quick in saying about people what they dislike, they speak about him that about which they have no knowledge.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #35)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he imparts a valuable lesson about the consequences of hasty and baseless speech. Let us delve into the words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding of its meaning and significance.
The key words in this Hadith are (asra'a) "أَسْرَعَ", which means "quick" or "hasty," and (yakrahoon) "يَكْرَهُونَ", which means "they dislike." Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us that if someone is quick to speak about others in a manner that they dislike, then those people will also speak about him in a similar manner, but without any knowledge or basis.
To fully comprehend the wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12):
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse highlights the importance of avoiding negative assumptions, spying, and backbiting. It emphasizes the repugnance of speaking ill of others, comparing it to the repulsion one would feel towards consuming the flesh of a deceased person. Just as we would find such an act abhorrent, we should also find it detestable to engage in gossip or slander.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse highlights the importance of refraining from ridiculing and insulting others. It reminds us that we should not judge or belittle others, as they may be better than us in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It also emphasizes the negative consequences of using offensive nicknames or engaging in disrespectful speech.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of hasty and baseless speech. When we speak ill of others without proper knowledge or understanding, we not only harm their reputation but also invite similar treatment upon ourselves. Just as we dislike being spoken about in a negative manner, we should refrain from doing the same to others.
This Hadith encourages us to be mindful of our words and to speak with wisdom and knowledge. It reminds us to exercise restraint and to avoid spreading rumors, gossip, or slander. By doing so, we can foster a culture of respect, unity, and harmony within the Muslim community.
Let us reflect upon the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to embody his wisdom and knowledge. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to speak with kindness, truthfulness, and wisdom, and protect us from the pitfalls of hasty and baseless speech.
