حُسْنُ الظَّنِّ أنْ تُخْلِصَ العَمَلَ، وتَرْجُو مِنَ اللّهِ أنْ يَعْفُوَ عَنِ الزَّلَلِ۔
Thinking positive means making your actions sincere and hoping that Allah will forgive your missteps.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Conjecture)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Thinking positive means making your actions sincere and hoping that Allah will forgive your missteps.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening saying in light of the Quran.
The word (husnuz zann) "حُسْنُ الظَّنِّ" in this hadith refers to thinking positively or having good thoughts. It is a mindset that is rooted in sincerity and optimism. This mindset is not merely wishful thinking, but it is accompanied by actions that are performed with utmost sincerity and devotion. It is important to note that this positive thinking should not be confused with being naive or ignorant of the challenges and trials that one may face in life. Rather, it is a mindset that is grounded in trust in Allah's mercy and forgiveness.
Allah, in the Quran, encourages us to have good thoughts about Him and His decree. In Surah Al-A'raf, Allah says, (Quran 6:54)
And when those who believe in Our verses come to you, say, 'Peace be upon you. Your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy: that any of you who does wrong out of ignorance and then repents after that and corrects himself - indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.'
This verse highlights Allah's attribute of mercy and forgiveness, and it reassures us that He is always ready to accept our repentance and forgive our missteps.
Furthermore, the hadith emphasizes the importance of sincerity in our actions. The word (tukhlisa) "تُخْلِصَ" in the hadith means to make something sincere or pure. It implies that our actions should be performed solely for the sake of Allah, without any ulterior motives or desires for worldly gains. Allah says in the Quran, (Quran 98:5)
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.
This verse emphasizes the importance of sincerity in worship and highlights that true religion is based on sincerity towards Allah.
When we combine the concepts of positive thinking and sincerity, we understand that our actions should be performed with the intention of seeking Allah's pleasure and forgiveness. We should strive to do good deeds, while acknowledging our shortcomings and seeking forgiveness for our mistakes. This mindset of positive thinking and sincerity leads to a virtuous cycle of continuous self-improvement and seeking Allah's forgiveness.
The consequences of adopting this mindset are profound. When we think positively and sincerely strive to do good, we develop a strong connection with Allah and His guidance. We become more conscious of our actions and intentions, and we are motivated to constantly improve ourselves. This mindset also helps us overcome the negative effects of self-doubt and despair, as we trust in Allah's mercy and forgiveness.
Reflecting on this hadith, we are reminded of the importance of having a positive mindset and sincere actions in our daily lives. It encourages us to always strive for excellence and seek Allah's forgiveness when we fall short. By doing so, we can cultivate a strong relationship with Allah and experience the peace and contentment that comes from knowing that we are sincerely striving to please Him.
May Allah grant us the ability to think positively, make our actions sincere, and seek His forgiveness for our missteps. Ameen.
