Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith and explore their significance in light of the Quran.
The first word to be examined is (tabdheer) "تَبْذِير", which refers to wastefulness or extravagance. This term encompasses the act of spending excessively or squandering resources without any valid purpose. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against such behavior in the Quran, stating in Surah Al-Isra (17:27):
And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.
This verse cautions against indulging in wastefulness, as it leads to financial difficulties and societal disapproval.
The second word in the Hadith is (israaf) "إِسْرَاف", which means extravagance or excessiveness. This term refers to going beyond the limits or boundaries set by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in matters of wealth, resources, or actions. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:31), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against extravagance, saying:
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.
This verse reminds us to strike a balance in our consumption and avoid indulging in excessive or unnecessary luxuries.
The next phrase in the Hadith is (takhalluq bil 'adl wal insaf) "تَخَلُّقِ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِنْصَافِ", which means to adopt the qualities of justice and equity. And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse emphasizes the significance of justice and fairness in resolving conflicts and maintaining harmonious relationships.
