Hadith #3247

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The best of all qualities is truthfulness in speech and noble actions.

This thought-provoking saying emphasizes the importance of two fundamental aspects of a person's character: truthfulness in speech and noble actions.

Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (sidq) "صِدْقُ" refers to truthfulness, sincerity, and honesty in speech. It encompasses speaking the truth, avoiding falsehood, and being genuine in one's words. The word (maqal) "مَقالِ" refers to speech or discourse. Therefore, the phrase (sidq al-maqal) "صِدْقُ المَقالِ" implies that the best quality one can possess is to be truthful in their speech.

The second part of the Hadith highlights the significance of noble actions. The word (makarim) "مَكارِمُ" refers to noble or virtuous deeds. It encompasses acts of kindness, generosity, justice, and righteousness. The word (af'al) "أفْعالِ" refers to actions or deeds. Hence, the phrase (makarim al-af'al) "مَكارِمُ الأفْعالِ" signifies the importance of engaging in noble and righteous actions.

To understand the significance of truthfulness in speech and noble actions, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:70):

O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice.

This verse emphasizes the importance of speaking words that are just and truthful. It encourages Muslims to be mindful of their speech, ensuring that it aligns with the principles of justice and truthfulness.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakah; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.

This verse highlights the importance of noble actions in Islam. It emphasizes that true righteousness is not merely limited to external rituals, but it encompasses belief in Allah, fulfilling one's obligations, and engaging in acts of charity and kindness towards others.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims of the significance of both truthfulness in speech and noble actions.
