Truthfulness is the pillar of Islam and the column of faith.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Truthfulness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Truthfulness is the pillar of Islam and the column of faith.
This amazing Hadith emphasizes the importance of truthfulness in the life of a Muslim. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The Arabic word used in this Hadith for "truthfulness" is (الصدق) "as-sidq". Sidq refers to the quality of being truthful, sincere, and honest in one's words, actions, and intentions. It is a fundamental aspect of Islam, as it forms the foundation upon which the entire religion is built. The word (عِمَادُ) "imad" is used to describe truthfulness as the pillar of Islam. Just as a pillar provides support and stability to a structure, truthfulness provides the necessary support and stability to the practice of Islam.
The Hadith further describes truthfulness as the "column" or "support" of faith. The word (دَعَامَةُ) "da'amah" signifies a strong and sturdy column that upholds and sustains something. In this context, truthfulness acts as a pillar that strengthens and preserves the faith of a believer. It is through truthfulness that a Muslim's faith is fortified and remains steadfast.
The Quranic verses beautifully support the significance of truthfulness in Islam. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:15),
Indeed, the believers are those who believe in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.
This verse highlights that true believers are those who not only have faith but also demonstrate their sincerity and truthfulness through their actions and sacrifices.
In Surah Al-A'raf (7:172), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the covenant He took from the descendants of Adam, saying,
And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], 'Am I not your Lord?' They said, 'Yes, we have testified.' This - lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection, 'Indeed, we were of this unaware.'
This verse highlights the importance of truthfulness in acknowledging and affirming the oneness of Allah. It reminds us that our very existence is based on the truthfulness of our covenant with our Creator.
The consequences of truthfulness are far-reaching. When a Muslim upholds truthfulness in all aspects of their life, it leads to a strong and unshakable faith. Truthfulness fosters trust and sincerity in relationships, both with Allah and with fellow human beings. It establishes a solid foundation for the practice of Islam and strengthens the individual's character.
Conversely, the absence of truthfulness can have detrimental effects on a person's faith and character. Lying, deceit, and hypocrisy erode the trust of others and weaken the bond between the individual and Allah. It leads to a state of confusion and uncertainty, hindering spiritual growth and diminishing the rewards of righteous deeds.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, emphasized the importance of truthfulness in his teachings and actions. His unwavering commitment to truthfulness earned him the title of (the truthful) "As-Siddiq" from the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) himself. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) life serves as a shining example of the profound impact of truthfulness on one's faith and character.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the pivotal role of truthfulness in Islam. It is the pillar that upholds the practice of Islam and the column that supports one's faith. By embodying truthfulness in our words, actions, and intentions, we strengthen our relationship with Allah and enhance our character as Muslims. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be truthful in all aspects of our lives and may He bless us with a steadfast faith.
