Hadith #8139

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Negligence reaps delusion and brings one closer to destruction.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful saying and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (ghaflah) "غَفْلَةُ" in this Hadith refers to negligence or heedlessness. It is a state of being unaware or inattentive to one's spiritual obligations and the consequences of one's actions. Negligence can lead to a false sense of security and delusion, as one becomes detached from the reality of their actions and their impact on their spiritual well-being.

To understand the gravity of negligence, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us against falling into this state. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:179), Allah says,

And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.

This verse emphasizes that negligence blinds individuals to the truth and leads them astray. They become like cattle, unaware of the purpose of their existence and the consequences of their actions. Negligence not only affects one's spiritual well-being but also distances them from the guidance of Allah and the teachings of Islam.

Furthermore, negligence brings one closer to destruction, as mentioned in the Hadith. The word (igtirar) "اِغْتِرارَ" in the Hadith refers to delusion or deception. When one is negligent, they are susceptible to falling into delusions and being deceived by their own desires and the temptations of the world. This delusion can lead to destructive behavior and ultimately result in the ruin of one's spiritual and worldly affairs.

In Surah Al-Hashr (59:18), Allah warns us about the consequences of being deceived by the worldly life. He says,

O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from remembrance of Allah. And whoever does that - then those are the losers.

This verse highlights that being deluded by worldly possessions and distractions can lead to loss and destruction in both this life and the hereafter.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be vigilant and conscious of their actions. Negligence can lead to a false sense of security and detachment from the reality of our spiritual obligations. It is crucial for us to constantly reflect on our actions, seek knowledge, and strive to improve ourselves.

By being aware of the consequences of negligence and the delusions it brings, we can protect ourselves from falling into destructive behavior and ensure that we are on the path of righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to remain vigilant and steadfast in our pursuit of His pleasure.
