اِحْذَرُوا الذُّنُوبَ المُورِطَةَ، والعُيُوبَ المُسْخِطَةَ۔
Be careful of the sins that lead you to deep trouble the vices that bring the wrath of Allah.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vices And Those Who Commit Them)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us to be cautious of two types of sins: (sins that lead to deep trouble) "الذُّنُوبَ المُورِطَةَ" and (vices that bring the wrath of Allah) "العُيُوبَ المُسْخِطَةَ". Let us delve into the meanings of these words and explore their significance in light of the Quran.
The word (sins) "الذُّنُوبَ" refers to actions or deeds that go against the commandments of Allah. These sins can be major or minor, but both have consequences. The term (that lead to deep trouble) "المُورِطَةَ" implies that these sins have severe consequences and can lead a person into a state of distress and hardship. This highlights the seriousness of such sins and the need for Muslims to be cautious and avoid them.
To understand the concept of sins leading to deep trouble, we can turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 20:124)
And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed life
This verse emphasizes that when a person neglects the remembrance of Allah and indulges in sinful actions, they will experience a sense of sadness and despair in their life. This serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their actions and to strive for righteousness.
The second part of the Hadith warns us about (vices that bring the wrath of Allah) "العُيُوبَ المُسْخِطَةَ". The word (vices) "العُيُوبَ" refers to moral defects or flaws in character, while (that bring the wrath of Allah) "المُسْخِطَةَ" indicates that these vices provoke the anger and displeasure of Allah.
In the Quran, Allah warns us about the consequences of indulging in vices that anger Him. For example, in Surah Al-Imran, Allah says, (Quran 4:111)
And whoever commits a sin only earns it against himself. And Allah is ever Knowing and Wise
This verse highlights that when a person engages in vices, they harm themselves and invite the displeasure of Allah. It is crucial for Muslims to be aware of these vices and strive to purify their hearts and souls from such defects.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) thought-provoking saying serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious of the sins that lead to deep trouble and the vices that bring the wrath of Allah. By avoiding these sins and vices, we can protect ourselves from the negative consequences that they bring upon us.
Furthermore, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasis on the importance of avoiding these sins and vices highlights his deep knowledge and understanding of the consequences of our actions. As the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed a profound knowledge of the Quran and the teachings of Islam. His words serve as a guiding light for Muslims, reminding us of the importance of righteousness and the consequences of straying from the path of Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns Muslims to be cautious of sins that lead to deep trouble and vices that bring the wrath of Allah. By understanding the severity of these sins and vices, and by seeking guidance from the Quran, we can strive to avoid them and lead a life that is pleasing to Allah. May Allah guide us all to righteousness and protect us from the pitfalls of sin.
