حُسنُ الأدبِ أفْضلُ نَسَب وأشرَفُ سَبب۔
Good etiquette is the best attribute and noblest means.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Etiquette)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
حُسنُ الأدبِ أفْضلُ نَسَب وأشرَفُ سَبب۔
This can be translated as,
Good etiquette is the best attribute and noblest means.
In this beautiful saying, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of good manners and etiquette in our lives.
The word (husn) "حُسنُ" refers to goodness, beauty, and excellence. It encompasses all positive qualities and attributes. (adab) "الأدبِ" refers to etiquette, manners, and behavior. It encompasses the way we interact with others, the respect we show, and the consideration we have for their feelings.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that good etiquette is not only a desirable quality but also the best attribute one can possess. It surpasses any other attribute or quality because it reflects the inner beauty of a person's character. It is a manifestation of their piety, humility, and sincerity. Good etiquette is not limited to specific situations or relationships; rather, it should be observed in all aspects of our lives.
The importance of good etiquette is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse highlights the importance of treating others with respect and avoiding ridicule or insult. It teaches us to appreciate the diversity and uniqueness of individuals and to refrain from judging or belittling others. Good etiquette requires us to be mindful of our words and actions, and to always strive for kindness and empathy.
Another verse that supports the importance of good etiquette is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.
This verse reminds us to choose our words wisely and to speak in a manner that is pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encourages us to use kind and gentle speech, avoiding harshness or offensive language. Good etiquette involves speaking respectfully and positively, even in times of disagreement or conflict.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further states that good etiquette is not only the best attribute but also the noblest means. This means that it is the most honorable and virtuous way to achieve our goals and interact with others. When we exhibit good manners and treat others with respect, we create an atmosphere of harmony and unity. Our actions have a profound impact on our relationships and the society at large.
Good etiquette has far-reaching consequences. It fosters trust, strengthens bonds, and promotes a sense of belonging. It creates an environment where individuals feel valued and appreciated. It also serves as a means of inviting others towards Islam, as our behavior and manners reflect the teachings of our religion.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his exceptional knowledge, wisdom, and impeccable manners. His words in this Hadith serve as a reminder for all Muslims to strive for excellence in their conduct. By embodying good etiquette, we can elevate ourselves spiritually and contribute to a more harmonious and compassionate society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that good etiquette is not only a desirable quality but also the best attribute and noblest means. It emphasizes the importance of treating others with respect, kindness, and empathy. By embodying good manners, we can strengthen our relationships, create a positive impact, and ultimately seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to practice good etiquette in our lives and grant us the ability to follow the footsteps of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
